Dharamsala or Dharamshāla is a city in Kangra, a district in Himachal Pradesh state in northern India. The name has several spellings according to translation but stems from the word meaning "restful place".
Home to Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current Dalai Lama, Dharamsala town has become notable as being the seat of the Central Tibetan Administration whilst His Holiness remains in exile from his native Tibet. The Namgyal Monastry is located nearby at McLeod Ganj and is a popular tourist attraction.
The town was founded by annexation in 1849 as a regimental barracks for British troops serving in the mountains. However, there are records showing that Tibetian monks have had links to this area as early as the 8th century.
Dharamsala has become the municipal capital of the Kangra valley and the Dhauladhar mountains.
