Brienz village lies on the northern shore at the eastern end of Lake Brienz (Brienzer See). The name also applies to the surrounding Brienz municipality which includes the mouth of the Aare River and the villages of Kienholz, Engi and Schwendi. The area is mountainous with Planalp and Giebelegg leading to Brienzer Rothorn (2,351m) to the north and Brienzerberg and Giessbach Falls, Tschingelfeld, Hinterburg and Axalp and Schwarzhorn (2,928m) to the south.
Brienz - Tourist Attractions
Much of the tourism around Brienze is based in mountain activities such as walking, climbing and skiing. Some of the local areas of interest include:- Brienz Rothorn Bahn (Brienz Rothorn Railway) - a steam train up the Brienzer Rothorn.
- Freilichtmuseum in Ballenberg - open air architectural museum with over 100 buildings showing different styles from around Switzerland.
- Giessbach Waterfall - dramatic waterfall with the Giessbach-Bahn, the oldest Funicular in Europe.
- Brienz Promenade - beautiful promenade along the edge of the lake dating from the early 20th century, with tree plantings and flower beds.
- Kantonale Schnitzerschule Brienz - Brienz Woodcarving School and Museum open to the public as a living museum and craft shops.
- Brienzer See Cruise - restful cruise on Brienz Lake taking in the fantastic mountain scenery.
- Brunngasse - the most beautiful street in Birenz with 18th century buildings decorated with wood carvings
- Axalp - a small, family-friendly winter sports area near Brienz with play and learning areas for children.
- Meiringen-Hasliberg Skiing - Brienz is fairly close to the Meiringen-Hasliberg skiing resort and slopes.
- Brienzer Rothorn - 2350m high peak overlooking the region accessible either by walking or using the Brienz Rothorn Bahn.
