It is thought that there has been a church on this site since the 9C. Earliest records date from 1158. The present church was built between 1394 and 1414. At that time a part of the Danube flowed past the church and the steps down along Am Gestade led to the river banks.
Maria am Gestade was the favoured place of worship by fishermen and others that worked on the river. It is also contains the remains of Klemens Maria Hofbauer (1751-1820),the Patron Saint of Vienna. The church has for a long time been closely associated with the Czech community of Vienna.
