Stift Klosterneuburg (Klosterneuburg Abbey) is one of the earliest and most wealthy monasteries in Austria. It stands in Klosterneuburg town a short distance north of Vienna in Niederösterreich. The monastery is a popular day trip location from Vienna.
Around 1114 the wife of Duke Leopold III lost a veil, caught in the wind and blown away from the castle they were staying in. The Duke vowed to build an abbey on the location where her veil was found, and thus it was that the small town of Klosterneuburg was bequeathed with the Stift Klosterneuburg monastery.
After the Turkish siege of 1683 the monastery found favour under Emperor Karl VI (1711-40) who planned to build a luxurious palace linked to Stift Klosterneuburg to rival El Escorial in Spain, which the Habsburgs had recently lost to the Bourbons. Like the Escorial, this palace was to enclose four inner courtyards and the buildings were to contain numerous domes capped by crowns representing the Habsburg lands. However the money ran out.
One wing of the proposed palace was built, this is the Residentrakt, which has two domes, one capped with the appropriate crown. Within this incomplete wing is the Marmorsaal (Marble Hall) whose giant dome is decorated with frescoes glorifying the Habsburg dynasty by Daniel Gran. The Residentrakt also contains the ticket office for guided tours around the monastery. The patio in front of the Residentrakt offers splendid views along the Danube and the surrounding area, as seen in this panorama.
After the guided tours it is worth visiting the outlying monastic buildings. Please see the other panoramic images from Stift Klosterneuburg for more information about the church and monastery.
