Echuca is in the heart of Victoria and central to the story of how this State developed, from its earliest settlers forging a subsistence economy from the land around this historic river portthrough to its thriving international importance as a destination for tourism, commerce and agriculture.
The Murray River, the longest river in Australia, flows through this region and the town of Echuca developed at its southern-most meander, the closest point to the city of Melbourne. As settlers traveled north inland from their beginnings as immigrants arriving at Melbourne dock, the mighty river Murray allowed communities to be founded along its banks as its water supported life and the beginnings of cultivation and agricultural in this arid climate. Paddle steamers established trade routes extending the importance of this region as Echuca connected Melbourne's international docks with the wealth of the gold rush and needs of the new foundling communities.
Today, this region enjoys State Forests, parkland and widespread areas of conservation and ecological interest. Tourism sustains many communities, both for the rich heritage well preserved in many living museums and for the outstanding natural beauty of the countryside.
