Pipe Clay Lake - FURTHER INFORMATION
Pipe Clay Lake - Coorong National Park visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Pipe Clay Lake' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from South Australia.
Panorama overlooking Pipe Clay Lake in Coorong National Park, a lagoon ecosystem in South Australia. The lake is just south of Salt Creek settlement. The Coorong takes it's name from the Aboriginal word for "sand dune". The park extends from Murray Mouth, the western end of the Murray River across 130Km east inland.
As a sanctuary for birds, animals and fish, this Pipe Clay Lake area of Coorong is recorded as being of significant State interest and near to the Deerite Nature Conservation Reserve. As a volcanic plan and wetland margin, it's a protected breeding ground and flocking plain for the Brolga, a distinctive grey crane with red markings which thrive in wetlands. Closely related to herons, they are fascinating to watch when flocking together in enormous groups at Pipe Clay Lake as they feed.
Other nearby attractions in Salt Creek include the Lakes Walk, which tours the various different ecosystems in the park and the Old Oil Rig, a reconstruction of the first oil drill used in Australia in 1892. Salt Creek also contains the tourist / visitor information office for the park. Nearby is Chinamans Well.
