Panorama of the Pomonal countryside and Barney's Rubble, a little shop near the main C222 road.
Pomonal is in the Grampians, a National Park in Victoria state. A small town with a few hundred residents, this community was built around the agricultural industry as orchards and tobacco plantations thrived in the rich and fertile soils here. A disastrous fire destroyed a lot of the plantations in the 1940s so around that time, the land use changed mostly to grazing for cattle.
There are still a few orchards in the area, one commercially producing apples. This area is notable now for the wild flowers and orchids which grow here, but rather than take them from the wild, do visit the nurseries which sustainably manage and sell these beautiful plants.
7Km north-west towards Hall's Gap, is the Hall's Gap Park and Zoo with native species including Wallabies, Kangaroos, Wombats, Possums, Emus, Dingos and many other domestic and farm animals. Next door is The Gap Winery, open to visitors daily.
