Sproat Lake - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Coming upon Sproat Lake late in the afternoon and noticing a very flat surface was magical. Much of the lake is lined with trees, obscuring the view, but a small rocky outcrop near a lay by provided an excellent palace to take a panorama of the mirror effect of the lake, with the surrounding mountains and the sky reflected in the lake's surface. This is a rare condition on Sproat Lake, as often the water's surface is rippled by the wind.

Lake Sproat in the Central Island region of Vancouver Island is a popular resting point on the drive over to Tofino and the Pacific Rim, close to Port Alberni. With over 200 miles of waterfront, and clear, warm waters surrounded by mountains it is easy to see why. Lake Sproat is part of the Lake Sproat Provincial Park. Much of the shore front is uninhabited and there are numerous small beaches around the lake.
During the summer months this is a very popular travel destination, with many people making use of the camp sites and holiday cottages around Lake Sproat. It is used for all water sports including boating, water skiing, fishing and angling. Lake Sproat is also home to the Martian Bombers, the largest fire fighting planes in the world, which are moored on the lake and used to fight forest fires.
Over a million people a year drive along the northern edge of the lake on their way to and from the Pacific Rim, Tofino and Ucluelet.
