A panorama taken from the newly refurbished lookout over the Sooke Potholes on the Sooke River. The potholes are exposed in the summer months when the river is low. They are large, round holes worn into the rock of the river bed, formed by stones being swirled around by the river during the winter months. This image was taken in April, and the water is still too high to see the Sooke Potholes themselves. The scenery around is still impressive though and worth a walk none the less.

The Sooke Potholes are in Sooke Potholes Regional Park, a short walk from the car park. The park was formed in 2005, and new paths, walkways and signage have recently been installed. The park covers 55 hectares along the Sooke River, winding up the valley. During the summer months the river is safe to swim in and the low water levels expose the Sooke Potholes themselves. During the winter months the river overfills the holes and has enough power to drive the stones and boulders round the bottom of them to continue to enlarge the potholes.

In the summer this park is very popular for swimming, there is a small gravel beach (Crescent Beach) which is often full. The car park here fills up early on the summer weekends.

From the 14 at Sooke, take Otter Point Road and then turn onto Sooke River Road. Drive to the end and park at Sooke Potholes Regional Park. Walk to the Sooke Potholes.
