Tofino is a coastal town on the west coast of Vancouver Island, near to the Pacific Rim National Park and about 40km from Ucluelet. It rests at the northern tip of the Esowista Peninsula, and is considered a part of Clayoquot Sound. Tofino is named after Jefe de Escuadra Tofino, a Spanish mathematician and scientist who died in 1795.
Tofino is a hugely popular holiday destination on Vancouver Island in the summer months, with thousands flocking to the Pacific Rim region to enjoy the water sports and surrounding nature. It is popular for sea kayaking, surfing on the numerous long sandy beaches, whale watching and fishing among other things. The town is well adapted to meet the needs of visitors, lined with various restaurants and cafes, full of interesting art galleries and hotels, motels and other accomodation to suit every budget.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Take the Highway 4 (Pacific Rim Highway) from Parksville across Vacouver Island. At the junction for Ucluelet, follow the 4 Highway north (right) to Tofino. The journey is about 170km.
