Elephant Rock - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Elephant Rock is billed as *the* highlight of the Valley of Fire State Park. this panorama shows Elephant Rock taken late in the afternoon. The sun is setting behind the ridge and much of the rock formation is in shadow. Even so, the overall shape is clearly visible, and is striking in it's resemblance to an elephant, complete with trunk. This is actually a sandstone arch formed by weathering, and will one day collapse.

Elephant Rock is one of the most famous sights within the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. It is a sandstone formation that looks like an elephant, whose trunk is formed by a natural sandstone arch. Elephant Rock is next to the eastern entrance to the park, close to Lake Mead.
There are many other sandstone arches with the park, with a large popular one being Arch Rock near the western entrance, and one at White Domes. However, none are as striking or well known as Elephant Rock.
