A marriage of ancient and modern formed in a labyrinth of glass and chrome: the interior of the Galleria complex building at the top of Hong Kong's Victoria Peak was a remarkable achievement in architecture by English designer Terry Farrell. Key design features include how this supporting structure glass and metal stairwell "disappears" when viewed from a distance, an optical illusion that makes the main upper bowl-shaped section appear to "float" weightlessly in the natural shallow valley between the summits of the surrounding hills. When illuminated at night, from a distance it looks like a floating bowl, wok or even a UFO! Symbolism is rich, with ancient and contemporary Chinese themes reflected in design elements including the upturned eaves and rice bowl shaped upper section, all delivered in this ultra-modern construction.
The bold and formal design made the structure a renowned landmark in its own right but the majority of visitors come to Victoria Peak for the outstanding views across the city, the harbour and the surrounding territories. The tram service climbs the hill from the Lower Station to arrive in the ground floor level of the Galleria Complex, below these glass and chrome towering "legs" of the building. In here, however, is not empty space - it's packed full of shops, restaurants and cafes, fast food outlets, souvenir stalls, amusements and even a Madame Tussaud's House of Waxworks. Stroll outside and you'll find several viewing platforms to enjoy the open space, fresh air and panoramic viewpoints including the Terrace.
