The Peak Tram is owned and operated by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels group who also own the Peak Galleria and Peak Tower visitor complexes at the top of Victoria Peak. It transports some of the seven million annual visitors to The Peak, plus those who live in the wealthy residential area on the hill, so queuing times are frequently over 30mins even off-peak.
Built as a funicular railway in 1888, it travels the 1,365 meters to a height of 396 meters above sea level with several stops along the way - Kennedy Road, Macdonnell road, May Road and Barker Road. At some places the incline of the hill is as steep as 50% or 1:2 gradient. The tram runs daily from 7am until midnight and the journey takes approx 5 minutes.
