Flagstaff - FURTHER INFORMATION

Flagstaff - Flagstaff visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Flagstaff' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Arizona.

Flagstaff is an alpine town close to the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Flagstaff has recently won accolades as being among the top 10 places to live in the USA, and commended by the National Geographic. The town is named after a flag pole made from a Ponderosa pine tree by a scouting party from Boston. Flagstaff is also popular as it stands on the historic Route 66, parts of which can be accessed around the sity.

With walking in the summer months and skiing during the winter, Flagstaff is bustling most of the year round with outdoor enthusiasts of one sort or another. Being close to the Grand Canyon National Park gave the tourism industry a strong footing since the mid 1800's. Flagstaff is also close to Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona, two other areas popular for hiking and climbing. The city itself has numerous parks, hiking and cycling routes with regular events organized for enthusiasts. During the winter, Flagstaff is ideally placed for skiers, with the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort just 15 miles north on the San Francisco Peaks. This ski resort provides Alpine and Nordic skiing and is very popular.

Naturally, the town has developed to meet the needs of the visitors, and there are numerous hotels, motels and other types of holiday accommodation available to suit all budgets. Given the popularity of the Grand Canyon, it is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during the busy summer months. The town also has plenty of good restaurants and cafes, and provides a relaxing atmosphere.

Other nearby attractions to Flagstaff include Barringer Crater, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Lake Powell, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki National Monument.
