Panorama of the elegant facade of Seymour Railway Station, once a vital railway junction connecting the emergent settlements as Victoria was colonised.
Seymour railway station's elegance reflects its central role in the transport network which allowed new outback land to be explored and cultivated. This allowed communities to be founded and sustained by the speedy and reliable delivery of goods by rail and also allowed produce to swiftly reach the more lucrative markets nearer the coast.
The principles that shaped Victorian-era thinking are reflected in how English settlers built their new home. Seymour railway station was built to be the finest and largest station of its time to proclaim its importance through its architectural grandeur.
Refreshment rooms were the 19th century option for feeding the passengers. Of course, this meant Seymour had to have the largest refreshment room in Victoria state. Before refrigeration and cooking technology made it practical to store and serve food on board the train, passengers had to exit the train to dine, then depart within 15 minutes. Therefor refreshment rooms were staffed with a small army of railway personnel to swiftly attend to their every need in luxury but as fast as possible.
Passenger numbers simply diminished as airplane and road transport advanced. The 82 houses accommodation the battery of staff were sold off and the jobs were no longer required. The state-of-the-art 9-track, 20-bay roundhouse turntable locomotive depot shed eventually became disused until transformed into a Railway Heritage Museum.
Still a busy working manned station, Seymour currently serves the interurban rail network and is popular with railway history enthusiasts.
