Emsworth Square

Photographer Description of Emsworth Square

I took this photo of St. Peter's Square in the centre of Emsworth on a deserted rainy day in June. Emsworth is a pretty little fishing village on the shores of Chichester Harbour. Once a small Saxon village, it became a busy port in the 18th and 19th centuries but more recently it has become known for its yacht harbour and as the home of the novelist P.G.Woodhouse.

Emsworth Square - Further Information

Panorama of St Peter's Square, a quaint Saxon town on the south coast of England.

This English Channel town at the heart of British maritime history is set back in a sea inlet. The two most important trades in the town were oyster fishing - and brewing! Sailors did drink a lot of beer in the 30 pubs around the harbour in the 19th century.

Now a quiet seaside town with a harbour for small pleasure craft, yachts and sailboats, this little town is a great place to spend a weekend by the sea and explore the surrounding towns, Portsmouth, Southampton, Gosport, Chicester and the Isle of Wight.

Travel Directions and Getting There:
East of Portsmouth, off the Havant Bypass road (A27). Take the M27 motorway east of Southampton.
