The Volkstheater of Vienna opened in 1889 in answer to the demand from the Viennese people for their own theater in contrast the Burg Theater nearby. The theater was designed by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. It follows the tradition of showing both re-interpretations of old works (like those by Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy) as well as continually putting on a varied programme by new playwrights. The main emphasis of the Volkstheater is Austrian playwrights. The Volkstheater also has a popular bar.
