Prospect Hill was climbed by Captain Matthew Flinders and used to survey Kangaroo Island. Flinders named the site, although for many years it was known as Mount Thisby, after an itinerant. There are 512 steps that take you to a rewarding view that includes American River, Pelican Lagoon, rolling hills and to the south, the Southern Ocean and the curve of the coast including Pennington Bay.

Prospect Hill is one of the most popular visitor attractions on Kangaroo Island. The Investigator Trail follows the path Capt Matthew Flinders took up this steep, sandy hill to discover the panoramic viewpoint at the Lookout above.

The Trail is well maintained with small signposts dotted along the 500 meter path with information about the native shrubs and plants found growing in the hillside bushland. There are also information posts with details about the history of the area as well as the flora, fauna and geology which makes up the amazing place. You may even be lucky enough to spot lizards and different types of spider here too.

Well worth a stroll to the top to learn all about the area on the way but the outstanding views all around the island from the viewpoint at the top of the hill makes the trek very rewarding.

The B23 main road from Penneshaw to Kingscote passes by. Park at the small parking area by the road at Pelican Lagoon and walk the trail to Prospect Hill.
