Canal Park - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
A panorama taken from Canal Park in New York. This small park is surrounded by busy roads feeding into the Holland Tunnel to New Jersey. The massive building that looks like a church on the northern edge of the square is the Ventilation Building, providing air for the tunnel. This picture was taken in the late afternoon. Virtual tour taken in spring 2008.

Canal Park is bordered by Canal Street and West Side Broadway, Lower Manhattan, in New York. This is one of the oldest parks in Manhattan. Canal Park has existed since 1833, when it was the location of the Clinton County Market for 30 years. In 1871 the market was torn down and replaced with an open space. Recently, the park had been neglected for 60 years, but a $2.7 million renovation project finished in 2005 renovating the park. It retains many original features.
Canal Park is a short walk north of Rockefeller Park on West Side. From here there are good views over the Hudson River to New Jersey. It is very close to the New York City Fire Museum.
