Petroglyph Canyon is an easily accessible attraction in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. It is a short distance north from the Visitor Center, on the road to White Domes.
As the name suggests, Petroglyph Canon contains numerous ancient petroglyphs. These are easily accessible from the car park, with a short walk down the sandy bottom of a narrow canyon. Another good place to see petroglyphs within the park is at Atlatl Rock.
Petroglyph Canon also contains Mouse's Tank, a small pond of standing water, one of the few within the Valley of Fire region. Here, unique topography allows the limited rain water to collect in a hollow that is in shade most of the time. The name comes from an alleged Southern Paiute Indian renegade named 'Little Mouse' hid out there in the 1890's. Little Mouse is supposed to have gunned down prospectors in the area and committed a number of other crimes. Officially, he was eventually tracked down to his Petroglyph Canyon hideout and shot after refusing to surrender.
