Pui O - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken in the late afternoon in the marshy fields seaward of the village. The picture was taken in the late afternoon. These fields are full of wild water buffalo, which much their way through the day. It is possible to get quite close to them. The buildings of Pui O can be seen at the base of the hills that rise to the interior of Lantau Island.
Pui O - FURTHER INFORMATION
Pui O - Hong Kong visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Pui O' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Hong Kong.
Pui O is a small village on the southern side of Lantau Island, Hong Kong. The village is close to a beach on Pui O Wan at the junction where the South Lantau Road divides. To the north is Mui Wo and to the east is Chi Ma Wan. This picture was taken on a path that leads from the village to the beach.
Pui O was formerly called Lo Pui O, and is still sometimes referred to as such. This can cause confusion for visitors. As well as referring to the village, the name applies to the surrounding area which also includes the small settlements of Lo Wai, San Wai, Lo Uk, and Ham Tin. These all cluster around the Pui O Wan bay formed by the Chi Ma Wa Peninsula. Behind the village to the north rises Sunset Peak.
At Pui O is a Tin Hau Temple dating back to 1799. Today this is a sleepy village whose main attraction aside from the temple is a long sandy beach and the water buffalo. Being close to Mui Wo, it is popular for the camp sites dotted around the area. Most visitors come by bus either from Mui Wo or Tung Chung.
