Photographer Description of Bethesda Fountain

Panorama taken late in the afternoon of the Bethesda Fountain on Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. Bethesda Terrace lies south of the fountain. To the north is The Lake, and Leob Boathouse can be seen on the far shore to the east.

Bethesda Fountain - Further Information

The Bethesda Fountain stands on the northern end of Bethesda Terrace and the Mall in Central Park, New York. The fountain is on the southern shore of The Lake in Central Park. This is considered by some to be 'the heart' of the park, and the terrace was designed to be a social meeting place, where people would come to see and be seen.

Bethesda Fountain is topped by The Angel of Waters, a sculpture designed by Emma Stebbins in 1873. It has become one of the most recognizable icons of Central Park in the same way that the Eros statue of Piccadilly Circus had in London. The use of an angle was highly apt, as the statue also celebrated the opening of the new Croton Aqueduct. This fed the fountain and, more importantly, provided New York with a much need source of fresh water.
