Photographer Description of The Mall

Panroama taken from the southern end of The Mall in Central Park. This part of The Mall is known as Literary Walk.

The Mall - Further Information

The Mall in Central Park was designed to serve the purpose of a social promenade. While the park contains many narrow paths through the various woods and fields, New York needed a large walkway for people to walk, see and be seen.

The Mall was designed to fulfill this. It runs north through Central Park from Transverse Road number 1, is 40 feet wide and lined with American Elms providing a fantastic arch of trees. At the souther end is the 'Literary Walk', celebrating literacy and lined with the busts of many famous writers and poets as a kind of writers walk of fame. The northern end of the Mall finishes at Bethesda Terrace overlooking Bethesda Fountain and The Lake. At the northern end of The Mall is the Naumburg Bandshell and a bust of Ludwig van Beethoven.
