The Lake

Photographer Description of The Lake

Panorama taken from the north shore of The Lake in Central Park. This is a large and popular boating lake and the image was shot from the top of a schist outcrop. People often relax on the rocks, and some fish in the waters. A person was playing a saxophone under the covered seating nearby, adding to the atmosphere.

The Lake - Further Information

The Lake of Central Park in New York is largest body of water in the park (excluding the Reservoir). It was developed from marshland and stretches almost the whole way across Central Park. Thousands of people use it for boating with boats available to rent form the Loeb Boathouse. Before the construction of ice rinks in the park, the Lake was a popular venue for ice skating in the winter months.

The Lake is situated in the souther half of Central Park, just south of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and close to Turtle Pond and Belvedere Castle. On the southern side of the Lake is the famous Bethesda Fountain and Bethesda Terrace, which provides most visitors with their first, dramatic view of the Lake having walked down the Mall.
