Rocks by Heckscher Playground - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken overlooking the Heckscher Playground playground in Central Park. There seemed to be as many children clambering over the rocks next to the playground as within it. The Heckscher Playground is obviously a popular and successful park of Central Park. Virtual tour taken in spring of 2008.

The Heckscher Playground is near the southern edge of Central Park in New York and was part of the original Greensward Plan for the park and contains a plethora of play facilities in addition to the natural surroundings. The skyline of Manhattan rises to form a dramatic backdrop to the playground. The Heckscher Playground is named after August Heckscher Sr., who was a financier and important philanthropist during the early 1900's. His grandson, August Heckscher III (1914-1997), was Parks Commissioner under Mayor John V. Lindsay.
The Childrens Zoo and Wollman Memorial Rink are close to Heckscher Playground. Also nearby are The Pond and the Maine Memorial, on the edge of Columbus Circle. To the north, visible in this picture, are numerous baseball courts in the Sheep Meadow.
