Do a search for Hunter Valley in Australia and you will be inundated with websites about wine and vineyards. The Hunter Valley, through which the Hunter River flows, is one of the largest valleys on the coast of New South Wales. The environment is ideal for growing grapes. Lying north of Sydney and close to Newcastle, Hunter Valley is one of the most famous and important wine growing regions in the whole of Australia. Driving through the area, it seems that almost all the available space has been given over to the growing of grapes and production of wine.
Naturally, with the wine industry, a whole industry of wine tourism has developed along side. Many of the vineyards do wine tours, or have hotel accommodation on site. In addition to this, wine tasting tours from Sydney are very common. Some of the larger vineyards put on concerts, which bring in global star performers from around the world, with tickets selling for hundreds of dollars. These are very popular around Christmas, when corporate office groups come up in coach loads to party.
The Hunter Valley is also a popular place for weddings, as the surrounding countryside is beautiful and the vineyards are well practiced at the profitable business of hosting wedding receptions. As a result, most of the villages in the Hunter Valley region make most of their money either directly, or indirectly through tourism, from the mighty grape.
