Tung Chung was once a small fishing village on the north side of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. Today, with the arrival of the new Hong Kong International Airport, Tung Chung has rapidly developed into a new town, with new high rise apartments dominating the skyline. The private sector housing is on the coastline, and the public sector apartments set in-land. The first hotel, Novotel Citygate Hong Kong, opened in 2006, though more a sure to follow.
Tung Chung is also the transport hub for Lantau. From here most people head for the Tian Tan Buddha via the Ngong Ping 360 cable car which, when it is working, whisks 1000's of tourists a day to the site on a 5.7km, 25 minute journey over the hills.
The other, slower but much cheaper, way to get to Ngong Ping is by bus, which travels over the center of the island taking about an hour. Buses also serve the villages of the island, and visitors leave Tung Chung for the likes of Mui Wo and the fantastic surfing beach at Cheung Sha
