Maryborough - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Maryborough, approx. a 2 hour drive north west from Melbourne, is the heart of Victoria and the Goldfields. The imposing structure of the Bull & Mouth Hotel in High Street is hard to miss and is a grand example of fine architecture. Grand buildings, historic cottages and gracious homes are complemented by beautiful parks and gardens that give the visitor an insight into the rich history of the region.

The riches of a gold mining boom town paid for the extraordinary grandeur of the famous Maryborough railway station and these historic buildings throughout the town. Now a sleepy rural market town maintaining strong ties to its ancestry in Scotland, this rural town has around 8000 residents now which is considerably less than the 50,000 prospectors during the golden years.
Renowned for its landmark railway station, the fame of Maryborough extended when writer Mark Twain visited and commented on its finery and capaciousness far beyond expectations for such a small town. Of particular note are the ornate clock tower, the Flemish gables, the large portico, the wrought ironwork on the verandah, oak wall panels, marble dressing tables adorning the ladies changing rooms and the exquisite trimmings on the exterior facade. The station once services 14 lines but most lines are no longer in use. The station is now used for community projects but a multi-million dollar restoration project began in 2006 which may see services increase.
Also of interest are the tours of the gold mines and exhibits cataloging the gold-rush history at Goldfields. The regional Arts Complex is worth a visit in the equally impressive Old Fire Station building. Genealogy and researching history is one of the most prominent services offered in Maryborough with research facilities available at centers including the Railway Station. Maryborough is the starting point for the 300km Golden Way, a hiking trail which takes you through the 29 original gold towns in Victoria state.
