Southern Cross Station is the most important railway station in Melbourne and, arguably, the whole of Victoria. Thousands pass through here each day on their way to work in the nearby offices of the CBD. Similarly, it is the arrival and departure point for hundreds of thousands of tourists and holiday makers who come to Melbourne each year. All V/Line train and the majority of coach services operate from Southern Cross Station.
Southern Cross Station is one of five stations that form the City Loop round Melbourne CBD. The station used to be known as Spencer Street Station. A station has existed here since 1859, then known as Batman's Hill before that after the founder of Melbourne along with nearby Batman Park. The station underwent massive redevelopment between 2002 and 2006, opening in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and providing Melbourne with a very modern transport hub.
