Cooks Cottage stands near the southwest corner of Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne. The cottage started life in the Yorkshire village of Great Ayton in England in 1755. Whether Captain Cook actually lived in this cottage at any time is debatable, but in 1933 the then owner sold the house to Australian Russell Grimwade for £800. The cottage was then dismantled brick by brick and shipped to Victoria in Australia. It was re erected in time for the centenary anniversary of the settlement of Melbourne in October 1934, and has become a major tourist attraction in the city.
Fitzroy Gardens contain numerous other attractions and are close to several other important sights in Melbourne, including the City Museum, Parliament House and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
