The Dolphin Fountain is one of the attractions in Fitzroy Gardens. The fountain was installed in 1982 and stands at the northern end of the lake. It was created by June Arnold and is made of a pyramid of granite boulders upon which are mounted assorted bronzes sea creatures the most prominent of which are the dolphins. Other creatures found here include octopus, crabs, sea birds, sea horses, starfish, turtles and shrimps.
This fountain is a short distance north of a pond and close to both the Conservatory and Cook's Cottage. Just north of here is the famous River of God Fountain, near the northern entrance to the gardens.
Fitzroy Gardens are just to the east of the CBD in Melbourne. Water shortages are increasingly affecting Melbourne and the whole of Australia. It is not uncommon during dry periods for the fountains within Melbourne's public parks and squares to be turned off.
Fitzroy Gardens contain numerous other attractions and are close to several other important sights in Melbourne, including the City Museum, Parliament House and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
