The River of God Fountain was one of the first large features to be installed in Fitzroy Gardens. The fountain, built in 1862 by Charles Summer, has a man kneeling down caring an open shell on his shoulders. The figures on the fountain are cast in concrete. In 1960 the River of God fountain was removed and replaced by the Fountain of the Birds. Nearly 40 years later it was renovated and re-installed in the current position towards the northern end of the gardens.
From here a broad, tree lined walk proceeds through the middle of the gardens passing close to various other features including the new Dolphin Fountain and the very popular attractions of Conservatory and Cook's Cottage.
Fitzroy Gardens are just to the east of the CBD in Melbourne. Water shortages are increasingly affecting Melbourne and the whole of Australia. It is not uncommon during dry periods for the fountains within Melbourne's public parks and squares to be turned off.
Fitzroy Gardens contain numerous other attractions and are close to several other important sights in Melbourne, including the City Museum, Parliament House and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
