Federation Square is the cultural center of Melbourne. Situated in front of St. Paul's Cathedral and next to Flinders Street Station, Federation Square contains theaters (one open air), museums, the Melbourne tourist information center, shopping and art galleries. The square is also built right next to the Yarra River, and river cruises depart from Federation Wharf. The Princes Bridge crosses the Yarra River at this point, providing one of the main links from central Melbourne to the sights and attractions of the Southbank.
Federation Square is quite new to Melbourne, it opened in 2002 to a very mixed reception due to the expense of the project, and the architectural style. It has become a popular focal point of the city. The buildings are covered with polygonal sandstone cladding, a break from traditional forms. This is continued in the Atrium shopping mall and the Federation Square Theater. Most of the 470,000 sandstone blocks used to pave the square comes from Western Australia.
