Princes Bridge - FURTHER INFORMATION
Princes Bridge - Melbourne visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Princes Bridge' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Victoria.
Princes Bridge is a vital link in Melbourne across the Yarra River. On the north side of the bridge is Federation Square, a new cultural focus of Melbourne with novel architecture in the likes of the Atrium and Federation Theatre. Also on the north side is Flinders Street Station and St Paul's Cathedral. Directly on the southern side of the bridge is the Concert Hall, Victorian Arts Centre and th National Gallery of Victoria on one side of St Kilda Road. On the other side is the large Kings Domain, which contains the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance.
The first crossing built on this site was a wooden bridge in 1844. The current bridge is the third bridge to be built here. It was opened in 1888 and now carries both car and tram traffic. The next bridge west of here is the Yarra Footbridge, whose arch can just be made out in this picture. Just to the east is Federation Wharf on the north bank and a boat house on the south side.
