St Paul's Cathedral - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken inside St. Paul's cathedral in Melbourne. It was a good place to escape some of the heat of the midday, and the interior has a richly times floor and stained glass windows. The panorama was taken part way down the large nave and shows something of the interior. Much of the detail in the windows is obscured by bright sunlight, but this brings out the colours in the tiles well.

St. Paul's Cathedral stands on the northern side of Federation Square in Melbourne. This was the site of the first public Christian services in the city in 1836. The first chapel was built off site, and this area was used as a corn market until 1848 when it was made available for the construction of a church. In 1885 the church was demolished to make way for the current cathedral.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1891, but building continued well beyond this, not an unusual event with cathedrals. The spires were erected in the 1920's. Recent refurbishment has included renovation of the church organ in 1989. This panorama shows the view down the nave of the cathedral. Another panorama of the High Altar shows the rederos and views into the side chapels.
Today, St. Paul's Cathedral is something of an attraction in Melbourne, still having an active place in the middle of the city. As with most cathedrals, the architecture and environment encourages visitors to slow down and, for a few minutes, enter a more contemplative environment.
