Gloriette at Schönbrunn - FURTHER INFORMATION

Vienna virtual tour with a 360° panorama of 'Gloriette at Schönbrunn' linked to a Google map. A Vienna attractions travel guide.

The Gloriette at Schönbrunn Palace stands on the top of the hill in the Schlosspark giving a commanding view over the grounds and the surrounding area. It was built in 1775 and designed by Hohenberg. There is a central section built like a triumphal arch which is flanked by two covered wings. Steps lead up to the central section from the rear, and also up each of the wings. The wings are decorated with statues of Roman soldiers and shields, and guarded by pairs of lions.

The central section now serves as a café and restaurant, which is very popular in the evenings. In the times of the Habsburgs the Gloriette was a place to entertain guests and Empress Maria Theresia had windows installed to protect from the elements.

It is possible to ascend a set of stairs in the left hand wing of the Gloriette to get onto the roof form which you get a fantastic panoramic view of both Schönbrunn itself and Vienna surrounding it.
