St Peter's Cathedral is the Anglican Cathedral of Adelaide. The cathedral stands north of the CBD overlooking Pennington Park and the Cross of Sacrifice Garden.
The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1869 and the first section was completed and opened fully for services in 1877. By 1901 the whole of the nave was finished, in 1902 the towers were added and in 1904 the Lady Chapel was completed. Finally, in 1911, the front steps were finished, thus ending a massive building project.
The front of the building is believed to have been modelled on the front of the Church of St Jean-Baptise de Belleville in Paris which itself copied aspects of Notre Dame de Paris. The wooden sculptures on the High Altar Reredos were crafted in Exeter in England and contain English religious figures. Many of the windows were also made in England. Above the Choir Stalls hangs a copper crucifix covered in enamel. Visitors should also take time to look at the Lady Chapel
As well as being a place of worship, St Peter's Cathedral is often used as a concert and music recital venue. It also runs a popular annual 'Adelaide Cathedral Art Show'.
