Old cities in England were often defended by city walls, and Winchester in Hampshire is no different. Only part of the old city walls built in the 1300's remain, as do two of the gates into the city. One of these is named Kingsgate. Kingsgate is also unusual for above it is built a church, known as St Swithun's upon Kingsgate. Churches built above city gates were not unusual at the time, but this is the only remaining example, making it unique. Kingsgate is very close to Winchester Cathedral, and this gate was the preferred entrance used by pilgims to the Shrine of St Swithan in the Cathedral. They would stop and offer prayers of thanks at Kingsgate for a safe arrival to the city.

There are in fact parts of even older city walls still standing, some Roman wall dating from the 3rd century is visible next to the River Itchen, on the river walk between The Wiers and the Winchester City Mill.
