A little to the north are the Compton Gardens, named after Bishop Compton, who was Master of St Cross from 1667 - 1675. These gardens were visited by Her Majesty Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1986, and a tulip tree was planted here at the time to commemorate the event. The Church of St Cross can be seen to the southwest rising above the garden wall.
