St. Mary's Church - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama shows the inside of St. Mary's Church at Cerne Abbas. Above the nave, visible in this image, are unique painted shields bearing various verses from the Bible. The church is striking in it's simplicity, with bare stone columns and white walls.

St. Mary's Church stands near the center of Cerne Abbas village in Dorset, a short distance from the viewpoint for the famous Cerne Abbas Giant. The church was founded in the 1300s and some of the features are original. Among these are the chancel and the lancet windows on either side of the altar. There is also the remains of a 14C piscina built into the wall to the right of the altar. The remains of very badly faded 14C murals adorn the walls on either side of the altar.
Above each pillar supporting the arches at teh sides of the nave are unique shields that date from 1679 and are covered with biblical texts from the Geneva Bible. They can be seen lining the nave in this picture. The East Window behind the altar is from the 15C, and appears to be the top part of a much larger window. One unusual item in the church is an unbroken list of all the vicars who served here from 1317 to the present day carved on a panel in the vestry wall.
