Albert Park, in the center of Auckland is on the top of a rise next to the University of Auckland. The rise is called Symonds Street Ridge, formed by a thick layer of ash that erupted 60,000 years ago from a volcano. The park, established in the late 1800's, was previously the site of the Albert Barracks.
The Victorian fountain shown in this picture is an early feature of the park, installed in 1881, and used to be stocked with carp. Nearby is a statue of Queen Victoria, unveiled in 1899, the first of her to be displayed in New Zealand.
