Alava is deep in the heart of Basque Country in the far north of Spain. The capital city is Vitoria-Gastiez, a medieval city founded in 1191 by the King of Navarre as a defensive fortification. A beautiful city full of public parks and old buildings to explore.
Officially bilingual, Alava is the Castillian name and Araba is the official name in Basque language. As one of the largest and yet least populated provinces, much of the area is made up of wide open plains and rural farmland. Noted for its colourful history, ancient towns and spectacular churches and cathedrals, visitors would enjoy touring this region for medieval history and scenic panoramas across this vast landscape.
