Taken from the north side of North Head, this panorama shows the view over Cheltenham Beach and over to Ringatoto Island. It was a lovely day, with some clouds in the sky casting shadows over the blue waters and children grass-tobogganing down the side of the volcano on cardboard. North Head was an important military gun post protecting Auckland in the past. It is now set aside as the North Head Reserve and open to the public, becoming a tourist attraction for those visiting Devonport and North Shore. One of the guns still overlooks Waitemata Harbour from the South Battery.It is easily possible to walk from Davenport to North Head along the sea front. There are various walks up North Head itself allowing visitors to explore some of the tunnels cut under the hill and the old gun installations. The reserve offers commanding views over the surrounding area. This picture shows the view east and north. Cheltenham Beach lies at the bottom of the hill, and the coastline continues up the peninsula to Takapuna, passing Narrow Neck Beach and Takapuna Beach on the way.
