Auckland Domain - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The Auckland Domain is a large park in the center of Auckland. This panorama shows one of the many sculptures in the park, called 'Numbers are the Language of Nature 2005' and made by Chiara Corbelletto. This is a lovely sculpture, one of many on the Sculpture Walk.

The Auckland Domain is the oldest park in Auckland, covering 75 hectars just to the east of the CBD. The park lies mostly in the crater of the extinct Pukekawa volcano (one of the oldest in the region formed around 100,000-150,000 years ago). Lined with walks and open areas, the Auckland Domain is popular with tourists, not least for the presence of the Auckland War Memorial Museum which is one of the main tourist attractions in the city.
The Domain area has seen a long history of human use. It was settled by the Maori, who called it Pukekawa (Eng: bitter) after inter-tribal battles fought here. A memorial tree supposedly planted by princess Te Puea Herangi still stands on the central volcano cone. The land was brought by Europeans and became the site for a cricket field, botanical gardens and exhibitions. Today the Auckland Domain has hosted some of the largest outdoor event to be held in Auckland. Numerous attractions are found within the park, including the Wintergardens. The famous Auckland War Memorial Museum is on one of the highest points in the park, and infront of it is the Cenotaph war memorial. On the northern side of the park at the ASB Tennis Centre and the Auckland Bowling Club. Some of the points of interest are marked on the map of Auckland allowing you to explore the Domain.
Numerous sculptures can be found within the Auckland Domain, the one shown in this panorama is called 'Numbers are the Language of Nature 2005', and is a bronze made by Chiara Corbelletto. The sculpture is made of fluid triangles set together to make a complex surface. The intention is to create a reminder that all organisms have an underlying geometry that is part of the universal laws of nature, while the undulating surface reflects the changing nature of living things. It stands beside a path running from the Auckland Bowling Club up to the Wintergardens through an avenue of trees.
