Building a new future - Vitoria-Gastiez in Alava is rapidly constructing new suburban districts. This small city near the northern coast of Spain was quickly risen to prominence when it became the capital city of the newly autonomous Basque Country.

Zabalgana district lies south-west of the center of Vitoria-Gastiez. In the early 1990s it enjoyed a major land reclamation project to transform a former gravel mine into spacious parkland. Zabalgana park consisted of grasslands, forests, lagoons, rolling hills, nature trails and an unusual oak forest which is like a copse, a small "island" of trees amongst a sea of arable crops.

However, since the elevation of Vitoria-Gastiez to capital city, there has been a rapid expansion of the population and economy, therefor some of this parkland is being sacrificed to permit structural expansion.
