Wide open skies stretching out over a vast Alava plain to the forested hills on the horizon. Nestled amongst the trees is the city of Vitoria-Gastiez, capital city of the newly autonomous Basque Country.

Parklands around the Mendizabala and Zabalgana districts south west of the city were formed from land reclamation projects which transformed gravel mines into cultivated grasslands and forests. Vitoria-Gastiez is again transforming itself, this time through rapid construction projects to erect residential dwellings in these suburbs to meet the demand for housing in the rising population.

Medizabala is also notable for being an open-air venue for music festivals and concerts on this grassland.
