The "On the Cellar" gardens at Schönbrunn Palace are so called as they were built directly above the cellar of the court kitchens. It is one of the oldest parts of the Schönbrunn gardens, being laid out around 1700. The gardens have an octagonal pool at the center of the tripartite parterre which has an elaborate embroidery pattern of plantings. It is surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped pergola with five trellis-work pavilions. The Gazebo at the east end, from which this panoramic image was taken is open to visitors as a viewing platform.
Between the On the Cellar gardens and the east wing of Schönbrunn palace lie the Kronprinzengarten (Privy Garden), also visible in this image. The Kronprinzengarten form part of the Meidling Kammergärten. It received the name after apartments on the ground floor apartments of the east wing were refurbished for Crown Prince Rudolf around 1870. The Kronprinzengarten has four planted sections surrounding an ancient yew tree. In the summer months there is a good collection of citrus trees from the Federal Parks and Gardens Authority here.
Entrance to the On the Cellar Gardens and Kronprinzengarten is ticketed.
