The effect is very striking, especially as you leave the dark basilica into bright light for a short period before entering this artificial tunnel.

Montserrat is most famous for the monastery and Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, sat near the top of the mountain. This abbey contains the 'Virgin of Montserrat', a religious statue of Mary, unusual because it is black. Thousands of people come here each week to see and touch the statue, hoping to receive some spiritual blessing as a result. On the way out the pilgrims pass through an artificial tunnel lined with candles, which they can buy and light.

By Train: Take a train from Plaça d'Espanya in Barcelona on the Catalán railway, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Manresa line). The train connects with an aerial cable way (Aeri de Montserrat), which is included in the fare.
By Car: Take the N-2 southwest of Barcelona toward Tarragona. Turn west at the junction with the N-11. The signposts and exit to Montserrat will be on your right. From the main road, it's 14.5km (9 miles) up to the monastery.
