Wellington is the is the capital city of New Zealand, but most people come into the country via Auckland. Wellington became the capital city of New Zealand in 1865. It is situated on the southern tip of North Island on the Cook Strait, and is the southernmost capital city in the world. It is also one of the windiest, and has been called the 'Windy City' in the past - a name it is keen to leave behind. More common nicknames include 'The Harbour Capital' and 'Wellywood', probably a reference to the film industry that has developed here in recent years with the making of the 'Lord of the Rings' and other films.
