The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the principle museum in Wellington. It stands on the inner harbour front next to Chaffers Marina. It is most commonly referred to simply as 'Our Place' or Te Papa. 'Te Papa Tongarewa' roughly translates as 'the place of treasures of this land'. The museum contains some 25,000 items (including 7,000 dresses and textiles), some of which date back to the 1500's.
Te Papa is one of the principle tourist attractions in Wellington, with many of the exhibits designed with children in mind. This begins with a massive granite globe rotating in the main lobby on a fountain which children delight in maneuvering about on a new spin, and continues throughout the museum. It is the ideal place to bring children on a wet day. Here is a panorama taken inside the Te Papa Museum, in one of the natural history galleries.
